The Old House

KRRA Secretary
addresses |
|
The fifth
project of KRRA was for a girl, named
Arathy, who had lost her parents. She lives in a house (KRRA - 47A)
built with the governmental assistance. But it had no toilet or kitchen.
The Lions Club of Trivandrum Metropolis came forward to extend its
helping hand. KRRA also offered its usual amount of Rs.10,000/-
contributed by the Executive Committee members
(in
addition to the electrification expense of about Rs.2,000/- borne by
another member)
as
part of the total estimate of Rs.60,000/-. Thus, the renovation of the
house became a jointly-sponsored project. The key of the renovated house
was symbolically presented to Ms Arathy by the Lions Clubs District
Governor PMJF Ln G Hariharan at a meeting at Hotel Sabari Park,
Poojappura on March 27, 2011. The secretary of KRRA, Mr A
Sukumaran Nair, spoke on the occasion. President Ln Adv T H Lawrence and
vice president Mr A Ganesan Nair were also present. Here are the
photographs that depict a view of the old house as well as the renovated
one.

The Burnt House |

Under the fourth project KRRA's
achievement was still greater. The thatched house of a member of KRRA
was gutted by fire in 2006. KRRA immediately joined the efforts in
temporarily rehabilitating the family by providing tarpaulins free of
rent for many weeks. Later in 2008, with loans, grants and other reliefs
including the financial assistance rendered by KRRA, the family
constructed a new house. Here is a view of both the old and the new.

The dilapidated House |

The third
project of KRRA was accomplished in December 2007. A substandard house
(KRRA-297 with no proper walls, rafters and ceiling) belonging to Mr P
Sreekantan Nair, a labourer by occupation was renovated with
roof-replacement. The total cost amounted to Rs.10, 000/-. KRRA thanks the
NRI members who generously donated to this scheme.

PROJECT -
I |
|

 |
|
Conventionally, house roofs in
Kerala are thatched with either coconut leaves or earthen tiles.
With the advent of science and technology RCC as well as sheets of
asbestos, tin, aluminum, glass, fibre etc has begun to replace them. In
the process thatched houses, especially of coconut leaves, which are
looked down upon as outdated, are few and far between in urban areas. The
ones existing belong to the economically weaker sections of society. The
owners of such houses often find it very difficult to re-thatch them every
year.
A survey recently conducted
indicates that there are about two dozen leaf-thatched houses within the
limit of Kesavadev Road Residents' Association and that they are
occupied mostly by daily-wage earners. The estimated average cost for
thatching these houses amounts to Rs.3500/- per annum. This means
that the house-owner has to set apart about Rs.300/- from his meagre
income every month.
It was in this context that
the Executive Committee of the Association explored the possibility of
replacing the leafy roofs with synthetic sheets free so that the
recurring expense of thatching them annually could be avoided. The Committee was
earnest in its approach and thought that this project would be a symbol of KRRA's conspicuous service.
An American well-wisher
family, on request, offered a donation of 100 USD. Encouraged by this
external gesture of goodwill some Committee members rose to the occasion and
translated the
project into a reality. The house, KRRA-100, selected for the
roof-change belongs to one Smt Thanki of Kurattoor Lane. The total cost
has come to over Rs.10,000/-.
The pictures shown here
bear visible testimony to our venture. |
